by seoservices on November 10, 2012

It is said that you have about 3 seconds to hold someone’s attention on a website. Not much right? So, getting your online copy right has never been so important and is not as easy as it sounds. Not only does the content need to be accurate, but it needs to be engaging and interesting enough to capture people attention. And these days, holding someone’s attention is not as easy as it used to be.

We have compiled a list of the 5 elements needed to have great online copy.

1. Write the information people need

People have landed on your website for a reason and therefore, if they don’t find what they are looking for, they will simply go elsewhere.online copy 150x150 Great Online Copy in 6 Easy Steps

So, take the time to think about what are some of the common questions people ask you? Have a think about what are the hot topics in your industry. Also, try and put yourself in your customers shoes to try and understand what some of their concerns or questions may be.

Writing articles which directly address these concerns will help them better understand the product / service you are offering . Plus, you will then have an opportunity to alleviate these concerns they may have.

2. Have Proper Layout

This is critical to making your online content readable and engaging.

Nothing is worse than visiting a webpage where you have to scroll horizontally or that has huge paragraphs. That is immediate failure in our books.

It is so important to break up the copy into small paragraphs, so that the content can be easily scanned by the human eye. We can’t stress this enough.

Also, where possible, use subheadings, lists and bullet points. This is great structure and much more readable for your visitors. Also, bold important points to make sure they come across.

3. Understandable Language

Once again, put yourself in your readers shoes and avoid using jargon. Write in a language that everyone can understand, not just professionals in your industry. That is not to say that you should assume they are a child, but each industry has a lot of jargon and this can confuse many people who are not familiar with it.

4. Incorporate Images

Images are a great way to convey a message. They are pleasing to the human eye and also break up the content. So, it is really win-win-win on all levels. They also provide a nice little SEO boost and in the current social media climate, are also likely to be shared. So, even if it is just a little image, it is a good idea to include it as it adds a lot.

5. Do not copy

Although it may be tempting, it is illegal. It is also very unprofessional and from an SEO perspective, you will most likely get penalised from Google for it. So it’s simple, just don’t do it.

That’s not to say you can’t use other websites to research what you should write about, but be sure to add your own personality to it. It is a good opportunity to differentiate yourself in the marketplace.

6. Check punctuation

You’ve written you content in an engaging way, now for the last stumbling block. Punctuation.

Please take the time to check your copy for spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Having spelling mistakes or common punctuation errors looks so unprofessional and the last thing you want is for people to question your expertise due to a simple spelling mistake. A good idea is to get someone other than you to have a quick look at it.

So, there you have it. Follow these 6 steps to writing great online copy and your knowledge and professionalism will shine through. Good luck!
