How To Increase Targeted Website Traffic: The power of long tail link building

by seoservices on December 2, 2012

We get this question a lot from a lot of our clients, so I thought I would address it here on our blog.

Many of our clients come to us for our seo services, saying that they not only want to increase their website traffic or they complain that they have visitors to their website and no one is buying. These are two different issues which first needs to be addressed with getting targeted traffic or buyer traffic.

This is a common request and in our experience, is best achieved through long tail link building (longer keywords with less competition and less traffic).

Many of our clients are unaware (which is understandable if you have never worked in SEO) of the importance of long tail link building and often say to me “I just want to rank for my 3 keywords that you have chosen. I don’t care about ranking for lots of longer tail keywords which have much less traffic”.

But the point is that long tail link building is an important process for:

  1. building up the authority of a website,
  2. attracting a higher conversion rate through buyer traffic
  3. protecting it from sudden algorithm changes and
  4. the correct process for white hat link building.

Increasing targeted website traffic through long tail link building

A long tail link building strategy is about breaking down any competitive keyword into sub categories (which are more specific) and driving traffic to those subcategories.

Let me elaborate with an example.

Say you are trying to rank for the term, “carpet cleaning”. This is a very competitive term and also relatively generic.

As you can see from the picture below, it gets 8,100 EXACT match searches. That means, 8,100 people are typing in exactly “carpet cleaning” into Google. There are other methods we use to determine the competitiveness of this keywords, and in this instance, take my word for it, it is competitive.

We then break this keyword up into subcategories which are easier to rank for and of course, still related to our main keyword. Subcategories used in this example would be:

  • carpet steam cleaning
  • carpet dry cleaning
  • commercial carpet cleaning
  • carpet cleaning Sydney
  • etc

Taking this one step further, we then use the Google Instant Tool to find the longer tail versions of of these subcategory keywords that will match to these subcategory pages.

Shown in the picture below are some long tail suggestions for the keyword “carpet dry cleaning“.

or like this picture for the keyword “commercial carpet cleaning

These keywords are suggested by Google as frequent terms used by their users and are a obvious keyword to target.

Point is, although each of these keywords may have little search volume, they are highly targeted and much much less easier to rank for than the generic term, “carpet cleaning”.

You can think of long tail link building as building up a foundation of lots of keywords, all of which are working towards getting the popular keywords. Yes, this takes time, but correct link building does take time. We try and be clear with all our clients about the time frame of this process.

To further illustrate this point, if you think about it from Google’s perspective, it would look very unnatural if a site only ranked for 1-3 keywords with lots of traffic, and no other keywords. Fact is, there are so many variations of high search volume keywords, that by only ranking for 3 high traffic keywords, would be a major red flag to Google. In time, this person would be giving a penalty by Google (referred to as an “over-optimisation penalty”) and their rankings would drop.

In fact, after the latest Google algorithm updates, many people who tried to just rank for high traffic keywords have suffered the consequences of this and many have lost all of their rankings, and therefore all of their traffic.

With continual long tail link building, the number of keywords you will rank for will just continue to grow. It is not unusual to rank for hundreds of long tail keywords, all which are extremely targeted and often convert to sales.

You can see from this picture below how the long tail keywords account for 70% of all searches!
